The Taipei City Government, in order to promote gender equality and advance women's rights, established the Office for Gender Equality on the eve of International Women's Day, March 7, 2014. This initiative, which is the first of its kind among local governments nationwide, operates directly under the Mayor's Office and is staffed by dedicated personnel. The office is responsible for coordinating and planning gender equality policies throughout the city, as well as facilitating the affairs of the Taipei City Gender Equality Committee.
The Office for Gender Equality in Taipei City implements the Integrated Plan for Gender Mainstreaming and Gender Equality Promotion in the Taipei City Government and its Agencies. Internally, the office utilizes six gender mainstreaming tools: gender equality mechanisms, gender awareness training, gender statistics, gender impact assessment, gender analysis, and gender budgeting. It supervises the 33 first-level agencies of the city government to ensure the solid implementation of gender equality awareness into various policies and initiatives. Externally, the office conducts large-scale gender equality advocacy activities throughout the city and represents the Taipei City Government in participating in international discussions and organizations related to women's rights and gender equality issues.
